4.2 Validation of the results: Medical problems

Study of the brain tumor invasion problem (gliomas).

The brain tumor invasion is a problem of great importance, where medical treatment faces significant difficulties. The core PDE, that models tumors cell diffusion and proliferation properties, is being characterized by a discontinuous diffusion coefficient, since tumor cells migrate with different rates in brains white and gray matter, and, obviously, belongs to a category of complex PDEs that are being studied in this project. The main goal of this action is on the one hand, to validate the project's results (methods and software efficiency) in an important problem like this one, and on the other, to study the brain tumor evolution and behaviour, before and after surgery and/or radio treatment, through a new platform based on high-order methods, software and modern computer architectures.

Deliverables

  • Technical report of the results.
  • Publication of at least 1 scientific articles in international scientific journals or/and conference proceedings.

The Technical University of Crete Research Team is the main work group that will carry out the greater part of the action, will author and publish the results and edit a technical report with the description of the scientific activities that took place during the action and the research results that emerged.
